"Robert Frost was supremely two things! an artist and an American.A nation reveals itself by the men it produces. the men who create power make an indispensible contribution to our nations greatness, but the artists who question power make an equal contribution, for they determine whether we use power or power uses us. R.F. coupled poetry & power, he saw poetry as a means of saving power from itself. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses. Basic human truths must serve as the touchstone of our judgement. The artist personal vision, becomes the last champion of the individual mind against an intrusive culture. The artist is thus a solitary man. He has, as RF said, a lover's quarrel with the world....This is not a popular role. If the artist have been the most critical of our culture, it is because their sensitivity to justice. We all fall short of our potential. Society must set the artist free to express himself whereever it leads him. Never forget artistic expression is not propanda, it is a form of truth"--RFK 1963

"When Jesus went to Golgatha, they nailed Him to a tree. They drove great nails through his hands and feet and made Calvary. They crowned Him with a crown of thorns; Red was His wounds and deep, And human flesh came cheap. When Jesus went to Birmingham, we simply passed Him by. We never hurt a hair on Him, we simply let him die...." GH Kennedy.
"Odd that mankind's benefactors should be amusing people. Anyone who wants to lead our great country has to be able to entertain it"--Saul Bellow
During our Civil War many were critical of Lincoln's funny stories. Perhaps Abe sensed that strict seriousness was far more dangerous than humor. Critics said Abe was frivolous and his own Secretary of War referred to Abe as an Ape. Who does Abe appoint? the very same guy who made that comment. Go figure.
